Schedule Change Moves Two Final Rounds to Tuesday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Oct. 2, 2017) – Buoyed by a strong showing from freshman Tereza Melecka (Belcovice, Czech Republic), the ETSU women’s golf team stands firmly in contention after the first round of the Johnie Imes Invitational on Monday in Columbia, Mo.

The Bucs’ 295 team score has them tied for 3rd the 14-team field, just seven shots back of the top team, Missouri, which is hosting the tournament on the par-72, 6204-yard The Club at Old Hawthorne. ETSU is tied with North Texas, a mere one stroke behind Middle Tennessee for 2nd.

The first day provided a closely-contested tournament in which just 13 shots separate 2nd place from 14th.

On a hot, breezy day with winds of about 20 miles per hour, Melecka went one-under par 35 on the front nine and dropped an eagle 3 on the par-5 10th hole. She ended the day at a one-under 71, putting her in a four-way tie for 6th on the individual leaderboard.

It was Melecka’s second under-par round of the season and her best since a 70 in the second round of the Lady Paladin Invitational on September 18.

Both Ankita Kedlaya (Bangalore, India) and  Hee Ying Loy (Johor, Malaysia) closed their rounds with four straight pars to wind up in a six-way tie for 22nd at 2-over 74. For Kedlaya, it was her best round of the fall season.

Kornbongkoat Sararat (Nongkhai, Thailand) was even par at the turn and posted the Bucs’ 4th-best showing the day with a 4-over 76. She’s in a seven-way tie for 33rd in a field of 75 players. Yeji Ahn (Chang Won City, South Korea) carded a 13-over 85.

The Bucs, as a team, performed best on par-5’s, going 1-over par on the day with an average score of 5.05. ETSU was six-over par 3’s and 13-over on par 4’s.

“We had windy conditions today, and the ladies played well in them,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “We’re looking forward to the two rounds tomorrow.”

The Johnie Imes Invitational was originally scheduled to have three rounds over three days, ending on Wednesday, October 4. But the threat of bad weather in central Missouri led to a decision to play both the 2nd and 3rd rounds tomorrow, October 3.
