KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (Oct. 22, 2017) – On a day when birdies were hard to come by, ETSU’s women’s golf team finds itself in 16th place after the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament, Sunday in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Bucs’ Hee Ying Loy (Johor, Malaysia) was one of only six players to finish break-even or better on the par-72, 5981-yard Turtle Point Golf Course. The junior went even par on Sunday – going 36 on the front nine and 36 after the turn – to tie for 5th on the individual leaderboard.

The reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year posted three birdies and two bogeys on Sunday. ETSU had five birdies as a team, and the 89 golfers on the 17 teams in the field combined for only 79 birdies out of a total of 1602 holes played.

The Bucs’ 314 team score has them one stroke back of Kansas in 15th, two back of Daytona State College (Fla.) for 14th, and just ten behind SoCon rival Chattanooga for 6th place.

Freshman Kornbongkoat Sararat (Nongkhai, Thailand) produced the Bucs’ 2nd-best round of the day, grinding out a 6-over par 78, including a birdie on the par-4 11th hole. She’s tied for 46th in the standings.

Freshman Tereza Melecka (Belcovice, Czech Republic) – who won Medalist honors at ETSU’s last tournament, the Johnie Imes Invitational, earlier this month – finished Sunday with a 10-over 82. She’s tied for 78th in a group including teammate Ankita Kedlaya (Bangalore, India), whose round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 15th.

Sophomore Yeji Ahn (Chang Won City, South Korea) is tied for 89th after posting a 91.

The University of Mississippi leads the team standing at 2-over par 290. The Rebels got the top two individual showings of the day, with Diane Lim firing a 4-under 68 and Julia Johnson carding a 70. Old Dominion’s Maggie Simmermacher and Kennesaw State’s Roanne Tomlinson were the only other players under par, each with a round of 71.

Round two of the three-round tournament is scheduled for Monday, October 23.
