Tournament Includes World's Top Collegiate Golfers

NORMAN, Okla. (Nov. 16, 2017) -- ETSU golfer Hee Ying Loy (Johor, Malaysia) is in the running for one of the most prestigious honors in collegiate golf -- a spot in the Arnold Palmer Cup.

Event orgnaizers announced November 15 that the Bucs junior and reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year is 19th among International players in the latest player rankings. Based on Golfstat's NCAA Player Rankings, the Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings also reward wins and high finishes, penalize poor finishes, and consider strength of schedule.

The top 12 men's and women's players, American and International, earn spots in the Arnold Palmer Cup. The top six in the last pre-event rankings – due out next spring – automatically qualify. The rest of the International squad will include the winner of The R&A Scholars Tournament (April 2-3 at St. Andrews), four committee selections, and one pick by head coach Anne Walker of Stanford.

The Arnold Palmer Cup – named after the golf legend – began in 1997 as a competition pitting the top collegiate men’s players from the United States against players from Great Britain and Ireland. The “GBI” team was expanded to include players from all of Europe in 2003.

The 2018 event will be the first under a new format of United States players versus their counterparts from around the world, the first to include women’s players, and the first to be played in continental Europe.

In 11 tournaments since the start of the 2017 spring season, Loy posted seven top-five finishes. She was Medalist at the River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C. on March 10 and the Brickyard Intercollegiate in Macon, Ga. on April 11 (setting a course and tournament record in the final round), and was runner-up in the Edwin Watts Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. last February 28.

She finished 3rd in the Southern Conference Championships and was named SoCon Player of the Year for 2016-17 on April 25.

Loy closed out the 2017 fall season with back-to-back top five showings – 3rd at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo. on October 3, and 4th at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island on October 24.

ETSU returns to South Carolina for its first tournament of the 2018 spring season, the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, February 25-27.

The 22nd Arnold Palmer Cup will be played from July 6-8 at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France. The Evian Resort Golf Club hosts The Evian Championship, the fifth and final major of the season on the LPGA Tour.
