Melecka Lights Up Red Sky as Bucs Climb Leaderboard at Day 2 of Golfweek Challenge
Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Wolcott, CO. (Sept. 25, 2018) – On a day much of the field stagnated, Tereza Melecka (Belcovice, Czech Republic) went against the grain and stayed hot, firing her third straight par-or-better round with a 3-under 69 to climb into a tie for third-place at Red Sky Golf Club’s Fazio Course Tuesday.

Melecka, who played her middle 10 holes in 4-under, will feel even better about the low number as many that started the day ahead of her faltered, the 93-competitor tournament going from 18 that were even-par-or-better after day one to only 12 at the conclusion of day two. The ETSU sophomore was just one shot off the best round of the day at the Golfweek Challenge, as UCLA’s Mariel Galdiano shot a 68 to move into a tie for the lead. Melecka is level with Pepperdine’s Hira Naveed and the Bruins Claire Legaspi three shots from the leaders.

Also in contention individually is Hee Ying Loy (Johor, Malaysia), who continues to show an unwavering steadiness to open the fall season, shooting an even-par 72 to extend her run to five straight sub-75 rounds to start the 2018-19 year. Loy rests in a tie for sixth after closing her round with one of just 11 eagles seen all week on the Fazio Course to build momentum heading to Wednesday.

As a team, ETSU entered the day in sixth-place but, behind Melecka and Loy’s impressive play, are now in a tie for fifth with Georgia, who Golfweek rank No. 11 in the land. The Bucs are in good company in the top five, trailing only No. 4 UCLA, No. 27 Pepperdine, No. 8 Campbell and Denver of the 18 teams present in Wolcott. The Bruins, pacing the field by 13 strokes after going from nine-under to 16-under in the last 90 minutes of golf Tuesday before settling at 15-under after round two, hold the top two individual positions as well, with Tavatanaki tied with her teammate Mariel Galdiano at 6-under.

Having gone step for step with some of the best in the country the first two rounds of the tournament, ETSU retakes the course Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. ET, attempting to put more programs on notice.
