Johnson City, Tenn. -- Gardner Webb's Kim O'Brien pulls off the hat trick to help the Bulldogs defeat the East Tennessee State women's soccer team 1-4 at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The Gardner Webb Bulldogs (9-5-1) shot the ball 24 times and got past junior goalkeeper Lauren Fannon four times. Fannon did earn eight saves in her 90 minutes in goal for the Bucs. The ETSU Buccaneers (1-11-1) shot the ball 11 times and scored once in the second half.
The first goal was scored at the 7:22 mark by O'Brien. Three minutes later, she did it again this time with an assist from sophomore midfielder Allison James. The Bucs shut Gardner Webb down for the rest of the first half.
The second half saw some action very quickly. O'Brien puts the ball in the net again just 42 seconds into the second half. ETSU was able to keep O'Brien away from the goal for the rest of the game. GWU junior Michelle Vander Vart sneaks one past Fannon to score an unassisted goal for the Bulldogs at the 54:47 mark, making the score 0-4. The Buccaneers refused to be shut out. ETSU senior Lisa Gallagher scored off an assist from fellow senior Kristin Redfern.
On the evening, Gallagher shot the ball twice and scored a goal. Redfern attempted four shots, two were on goal and was credited with an assist. GWU's O'Brien finished with six shots, four shots on goal, and three goals scored. Vander Vart shot the ball three times, twice on goal and scored once.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, the Bucs travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on the Citadel Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
