Johnson City, Tenn. (October 11, 2002) - Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) scored four goals, and broke the record for most goals scored in a season (9), as the East Tennessee State women's soccer team cruised to a 9-0 victory over South Carolina State Friday night.
ETSU scored five goals in the first period of play to take a demanding lead over the Bulldogs. Ashton scored the first two goals of the game with her first goal coming at the 21:10 mark and her second at the 22:38. Freshman Emily Blyveis (Nashville, Tenn.) scored her first career goal and the third goal of the game at the 24th minute of play. Senior Lena Summers (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored off of a header from an Ericka de Paula (Boca Grande, Fla.) corner kick to score the fourth goal of the period. With three seconds remaining in the half junior Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) scored off of a cross from freshman Catherine Olsen (Thurmont, Md.).
ETSU would open up the second period by scoring two goals in the first two minutes of play. Ashton would score her record-breaking goal and the third goal on the night off of an assist by Brown in the 45th minute of play. The Buccaneer's struck again as sophomore Katherine Gentry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) scored off of an Elizabeth Smith (Arden, N.C.) pass to push the score to 7-0 in the 46th minute. Ashton would then scored her fourth goal in the 83rd minute of play after receiving a pass from freshman Leslie Lopez (Mechanicsville, Va.). Smith scored her first goal on the season and the final goal of the night in the 85th minute of play.
"We proved that we can finish," said head coach Heather Henson. "We need to continue to focus on the attack and defense for 90 minutes, I felt like we played in sections tonight."
ETSU out shot the Bulldogs 42-4. Keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.) earned her second shutout of the season.
With the win the Buccaneers move to 4-6-1, 1-3-1 in conference play. South Carolina State falls to 3-6. ETSU will return to action Sunday October 13, as they take on The Citadel at 2 p.m.
