Greenville, S.C. (September 30, 2002) - Freshman Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) scored her third goal of the season, but that would not be enough as Furman defeated the East Tennessee State women's soccer team 2-1 Monday night.
Furman scored the first two goals of the night, both coming in the first 20 minutes of play. Kat Kelley's header off a Tara Marker cross put the Paladins up 1-0 at the 14:34 mark. Danielle Petro would extend the Furman lead to 2-0 at the 18:03 mark, after knocking in a three yard shot that deflected off of an ETSU defender.
The Buccaneer's pulled within one as Ashton scored on a counter attack in the 74th minute of play.
"We played hard, but we must take care of the details on the defending end," said ETSU head coach Heather Henson. "The details cost us the game tonight, but we never gave up and kept pushing 100 percent."
ETSU falls to 2-6-1 overall, 1-3-1 in conference play. With the win Furman improves to 4-3-1, 2-0 in league play. The Buccaneers will return to action Friday October 4 as they travel to Carson-Newman for the 4:00 match.
