JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 12, 2003) - Sophomore Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) scored in the sixth minute of the second overtime period to give the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (4-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 SoCon) their victory tonight over the Radford Highlanders (2-2-0 overall, 0-0-0 Big South) at Liberty Bell Field.
"There are two things that you can expect at an ETSU game against Radford," said head coach Heather Henson, "It will always be exciting and it will always be physical."
Both teams fought hard, but were held scoreless in regulation play and in the first overtime period.
At 106:02, Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) made a direct kick to Ashton who headed the ball into the back of the net past Highlander keeper Tara Oleartchick for the game-winning goal.
"It was a great job overall," said head coach Heather Henson. "Our ladies defended as a unit, attacked as a unit, had numbers behind the ball, and won air balls which helped us control the pace of the game."
ETSU's keeper, Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.), made seven saves in the night and improved to 4-0-0 in her third shutout of the season.
"Preseason fitness led us to this victory and to our fourth team shutout of the season," commented Henson.
Women's soccer will face UNC Asheville on Monday, September 15th, before hosting the College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 19th at 7:00 p.m.
