JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 8, 2006) - The ETSU women's soccer team fell in a tough 3-2 match to UT-Martin at Skyhawk Field on Friday night. The Bucs drop to 0-5-0 on the season, while the Lady Skyhawks improve to 1-3-1.
The Bucs got off to a running start as senior Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) took the first shot of the night only two minutes into the game, but the Lady Skyhawks defense made the save. UT-Martin then jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Katie Behrens found the back of the net in the 12th minute of the game.
ETSU outshot UT-Martin 9-1 in the first period as the Bucs stingy defense clamped down on the Lady Skyhawks. The Bucs were then able to tie the match up when newcomer Jordan Monty (Dallas, Texas) found the back of the net on a pass from fellow freshman Krista Toliver (Arlington, Texas).
During the second period, the Skyhawks again jumped on the board quickly as Erin Jordan scored on an assist from Kendall Straessle in the 63rd minute.
However, the Bucs offense responded quickly as Adrian Mobley (Framingham, Mass.) found the back of the net just five minutes later.
ETSU continued to battle, but with a roster still decimated by several injuries, UT-Martin was able to score with five minutes remaining to take the 3-2 victory.
"Our forwards created the opportunities that we expected and needed for our two goals tonight," said head coach Heather Henson. "We had Jordan and Adrian step up for us tonight, which was great. Both ladies had a goal in the back of the net, but ultimately, we are seeing the effects of all of the injuries on the bench, especially in the goalkeeper position."
The Bucs will remain in Martin as they face Murray State on Sunday, September 10. The match is slated to begin at Noon CST.
