JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2007) - In front of a record home crowd of 213, the Bucs defeated former SoCon foe, Western Carolina, 1-0. The Bucs improve to 3-1-2 overall, while the Catamounts fall to 4-3-0. With the victory, the Bucs earned a total of four points to clinch the inaugural ETSU Invitational crown.
In the first period ETSU and Western Carolina traded shots but were unable to convert as they remained in a deadlock going into halftime.
The Bucs continued to battle as they continued to trade shots with the Catamounts, but ETSU took the 1-0 advantage when a Western Carolina foul set up a penalty kick by newcomer Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.). It would prove to be the game-winner as both defenses continue to battle it out.
"Western Carolina is a great team, every time we play them it is an absolute battle. Today it was a real defensive battle and our girls kept battling hard. We had two major points that we went over during halftime and in the second half we were able to come out and make the necessary changes," said head coach Heather Henson.
Junior transfer Katie Green (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way for the Bucs with four shots, while Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas) contributed two. Goalkeeper Erin Bilyeu (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) made four saves on the day.
"It was also great to be able to win the first ever ETSU Invitational presented by Citizens Bank. We really appreciate their support in helping us make this tournament a reality. The girls really battled today and were able to get themselves out of the hole we had put ourselves in with the tie in the first game against Tennessee Tech. They knew they had to come out and execute today and it paid off," added Henson.
In tournament play, a win is worth three points, while a tie is worth one point. A loss does not earn any points. The Bucs earned a total of four points after tying Tennessee Tech on Friday and the victory over Western Carolina.
The Bucs will wrap up their homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 19 against the Radford Highlanders. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. For all ETSU women's soccer action, visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
