FLORENCE, S.C. (September 5, 2010) - The ETSU women's soccer team saw its bid for an undefeated season come to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bucs fell to Francis Marion 2-1 at FMU Soccer Field in Florence, S.C.
The Bucs (3-1-1) and Patriots (2-5-0) each took ten shots in the match, while ETSU had a 7-2 advantage in corners.
FMU took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Yasmin Bunter deposited a 13-yard shot into the side of the net beating Buccaneer keeper Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.).
Later in the first half, Bunter added to the Francis Marion lead notching her second goal of the contest from 12-yards out as Bunter knocked in a loose ball after an ETSU defensive miscue to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage in the 35th minute.
The Patriots took a 2-0 margin into the half as the Bucs were unable to find the back of the net in the first half.
It only took 14 seconds for the Buccaneers to get on the board in the second half as freshman Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) ripped a shot from 37-yards out past the FMU keeper to cut the Francis Marion lead to 2-1 in the 46th minute. Lindsay Bickel (Hampstead, Md.) picked up an assist on the goal.
Senior Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.) looked to even things in the 50th minute, but FMU's Casey Durham deflected the Brinkman shot off of the crossbar with the rebound being played wide of the goal by Bickel to end the threat.
ETSU continued to pressure Durham until late in the second half, but was unable to net the equalizer as the final was 2-1 Patriots.
The Bucs are back in action Friday at 7 p.m. as they host Temple in the ETSU Invitational Tournament presented by Double Tree Hotel.
