Junior striker puts in three of ETSU’s four goals, Lady Bucs off to 4-0 start
MACON, Ga. (Aug. 27, 2012) – Scoring three goals through the ETSU women’s soccer team’s weekend sweep at Summers-Taylor Stadium, junior forward Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Kerns netted both regulation goals in the Lady Bucs’, 3-2, overtime win against Presbyterian on Friday, and registered the game-winning goal with a 27th-minute strike to help ETSU take down Radford, 1-0, on Sunday. The two wins moved ETSU’s record to 4-0-0, tying the program record for most consecutive wins to start a season.
The weekly honors are the second of Kerns’ career, with the junior’s other A-Sun Player of the Week selection coming Oct. 24 of last year. Dating back to the 2011 season, Kerns has captured two of the last three A-Sun Player of the Week awards.
On Friday against Presbyterian, Kerns led all shot takers with five shots, three on goal, while scoring twice. With the Lady Bucs trailing, 1-0, in the 22nd minute, the Kings Mountain, N.C. native won a ball in the penalty area and beat PC keeper Jordan Broadway with a strike into the left side of goal. Less than six minutes later, Kerns stuck again off a cross from freshman Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) giving ETSU a 2-1 lead.
On Sunday against Radford, Kerns netted the game’s only goal for her fourth score of the season. Zadrazil stole a ball in the RU penalty area, and got it to Kerns who hit the back of the net in the 27th minute. The Lady Bucs held on, moving to 4-0-0 for only the second time in program history.
Kerns and the ETSU women’s soccer team next face MTSU, Sunday, Sept. 2, in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
