Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State freshman Melissa Wilder knocked in a loose ball five minutes into overtime to boost the Bucs to a 2-1 win over Tennessee Tech at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex.
Tennessee Tech opened the scoring on an Angela Freund goal from Cherly Bjordan at the 23:36 mark. The score stayed the same until midway into the second half as Erin Lotzer received a corner kick from Elizabeth Smith to knot the score 1-1.
The two teams battled through the second half as ETSU goalkeeper Lauren Fannon made two spectacular saves to preserve the tie.
In the overtime session, the Bucs were not challenged on the defensive end. Five minutes into the extra period, Smith broke free from the Tennessee Tech defense and fired a shot on goal that hit the near post. She gathered the rebound and passed to a streaking Wilder who knocked in the goal.
The win was ETSU's second in overtime. The Bucs return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20 as they host UNC Asheville.
