Sunday, November 04, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn.- East Tennessee State seniors Lisa Gallagher and Kristin Redfern combined for four goals to lead the Buccaneer soccer team past Wofford in overtime by the score of 4-3 at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon. After the pre-game Senior Day ceremonies had concluded, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (3-13-1, 2-8 SoCon) went right to work on the Wofford Lady Terriers (4-13, 3-7 SoCon). Redfern, from Alexandria, Va., scored the first goal of the game at 17:38 by hitting a penalty kick. Gallagher, from Johnson City, Tenn., would get a shot in the net at 25:16 to bring the score to 2-0 in favor of the Bucs. But the Lady Terriers would not go down easy. Junior Faith Stewart would score two goals within three minutes of each other to single-handedly tie the game at 2-2. The second half would be as hard hitting as the first. Gallagher and Redfern team up to score another ETSU goal. Redfern's pass to Gallagher allowed her to score at 63:30 to put the Bucs up 3-2. Wofford sophomore Jaime Cutts scores at 77:47 after a pass off the corner kick from teammate Kara Palmquist to even things up again. At the end of regulation, the Bucs were close to the Terriers' goal but just could not get one in there before time ran out. In overtime, Gallagher hits the game-winning goal to lead her team to a 4-3 win on Senior Day. Gallagher's three goals was a season high for the senior. Gallagher shot the ball eight time and four shots were on goal. Redfern attempted three shots, had one shot on goal, scored one goal and earned one assist. "This game was a full team effort," said head coach Heather Henson, "It all came together. Today encompassed everything they have learned this season." For Wofford, Stewart shot the ball four times, three were on goal, and scored twice. Cutts attempted eight shots, five were on goal, and scored one goal. The Wofford Lady Terriers are the eighth seed in the Southern Conference and will face number one Western Carolina on Thursday, Nov. 8th at 7:30 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.
