JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 12, 2003) - The East Tennessee State women's soccer team was dealt it's first loss of the season Monday night in a 2-1 loss to UNC Asheville.
UNCA's 4-2-0 overall, 0-0-0 Big South) Kate Barrow lit up the scoreboard when she received a pass from Hilary McKay and took a shot from 30 yards out at 15:04. UNCA held onto the one goal lead for the rest of the first half.
Kelsey Dawson increased UNCA's lead and earned the game-winner, when she received a pass from McKay that was sent through the ETSU defense. Dawson beat a defender and created a one-on-one situation where she passed the ball into the left side netting to put UNCA up 2-0 at 57:47.
East Tennessee State (4-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 SoCon)found the goal in the 80th minute of play when Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) was taken down by a UNCA defender in the penalty area. Ashton took the penalty kick and that got the ball past UNCA goalkeeper Rebecca Bostian.
Ashton almost earned her second goal of the game with two minutes remaining. She took a point blank shot at Bostian who managed to smother the ball right in front of the goal line.
The Buc's finished with 11 shots to UNCA's 17. ETSU's goalkeeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.) was credited with eight saves on the night.
The Bucs return to Liberty Bell Field on Friday, September 19th to host the College of Charleston in their first Southern Conference match at 7:00 p.m.
