ETSU soccer loses overtime-heartbreaker to Jacksonville State
Sunday, September 11, 2005
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 11, 2005) - The ETSU women's soccer team lost a tough overtime match against Jacksonville State University, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex. Senior Meghan Morris (Bowie, Md.) hit the game-tying goal with seven seconds left in regulation to send the Lady Bucs into overtime. The loss puts ETSU at 2-3-0 for the season.
"We had many opportunities in the first half but we didn't make things happen," said head women's soccer coach Heather Henson. "The second half we adjusted our placement and created more attack opportunities. We have to be more aggressive on our defense though and come ready to play."
Ashley Smith got Jacksonville on the board first with a goal from Courtney Moore to put the Gamecocks up, 1-0. Both teams remained scoreless the rest of the first half. Junior Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) found the back of the net at the 59:00 mark to tie the game. Jacksonville's Courtney Moore answered that with a quick goal at the 62:50 mark to put the Gamecocks out in front again.
With just seven seconds remaining in the game, Morris hit the game-tying goal to send both teams into overtime. But the overtime period would not go ETSU's way as Joanna McCaughey scored the game winning goal just seven minutes into the period to secure the win for JSU.
"JSU played great defense and they didn't lay off us," Henson said. "Both teams made this an exciting game."
The Lady Bucs head on the road for the next two weeks before returning home on September 29 against Mercer. ETSU's next game is Friday, September 16th, at 3:00 p.m. at Mount St. Mary's.
