Bucs soccer drops to Morehead State, 1-0

MOREHEAD, K.Y. (August 27, 2006) - The ETSU women's soccer team was dealt a tough 1-0 loss by Morehead State at Jayne Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bucs now drop to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-1-0.

"We just didn't show up today," said head coach Heather Henson. "We set up this road trip from Mississippi to Kentucky to challenge our girls and prepare them for conference travel."

ETSU struggled early on to get their offense moving, as a stingy Morehead State defense clamped down and held off any offensive attempts from the Bucs. The Eagles out-shot the Bucs 11-0 in the first period.

However, the Bucs defense managed to hold off the Eagle's offense as senior Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) made five saves in a scoreless first-half.

In the second period, the Bucs were able to gain some offensive momentum, making five shots-on-goal, but Morehead State would thwart their attempts.

The Eagles took the lead with a score from Abby Doyle at the 53:59 mark and were able to hold ETSU off for the remainder of the game.

"We just didn't battle the whole weekend, but this was a learning experience for us. We are going to have to make some changes as a team to become more effective," said Henson.

The Bucs had six shots on the day with Katie O'Bryan (Hampton, Va.) leading the Bucs with two shots, both coming on goal. Sophomores Rachel Layer (Bel Air, Md.), Meredith Goldman (Knoxville, Tenn.), and Amanda Elieff (Windermere, Fla.) each had one shot coming on goal. Newcomer Kim Jones (Springfield, Va.) contributed the sixth shot for ETSU.

The Bucs return to Johnson City for their first home contest Friday, September 1 against Austin-Peay. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Liberty Bell soccer complex.
