Women's soccer builds success in the summer

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 17, 2008) - The East Tennessee State University women's soccer team looks to build on a successful 2007 season in the upcoming months, however many Buccaneer student-athletes are already taking that next step. Here's a quick look on how some of the players are performing this summer.

Rising sophomore and Atlantic Sun second-team all-conference member Kelly Brinkman, along with fellow sophomore Terri Miller and newcomer Carly Hunt led the RSL Soccer Club to a FYSA state championship. Coach Grande Streets' team automatically earns a birth into the 2008 US Youth Soccer National Championships that will begin later this month.

"I am very excited to have eight of our ladies competing for their state and respective regional tournaments, "said head coach Heather Henson. "These girls bring a winning attitude that we try to have here at ETSU. To have lots of players win or compete in State Cup and Regional Premier League spots it's only going to help improve their skills for the fall.

Incoming freshmen Casey Ulrich, Kaitlin Bevins and Lindsay Matijevich help led the Smokey Mountains Soccer Club to the 2008 Tennessee State Cup Finals, losing a heartbreaker  2-1. Coach Antonio Almeida team also qualified for the 2008 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series but will not get to participate due to scheduling issues. Fellow teammate and rising sophomore Alex Meehan, of the TN FC Tanasi, incoming freshman Genna PetersenOhio Elite, and newcomer Caitlin Gaughan joined the winning ways, as both Meehan and Petersen led its respected teams to state championships, while Gaughan team competed in one of the nation's toughest regions.

"Something we look to get in our players is lots of drive and determination," said Henson. "This shows the strength of our student-athletes on and in the ETSU soccer program."
