Soccer Bucs fall to top-seeded Owls, 2-0 in A-Sun semifinal

Thursday, November 08, 2007

KENNESAW, Ga. (Nov. 8, 2007) - The ETSU women's soccer team fell to the Kennesaw State Owls in the Atlantic Sun Semifinals at KSU Soccer Complex on Thursday night. The Bucs close out their season with a 11-6-3 record while the Owls improve to 16-3-0.

Kennesaw State got on the board early as Maylee Attin-Johnson broke through the defense on a pass from Beth Meadors and was able to put the ball in the net over keeper Rachel Van Horn (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) during the 13th minute of play.

The Owls gave themselves a 2-0 advantage when Caitlin Dingle scored off a ball knocked down inside the box during the 20th minute.

In the second period the Bucs continued to battle but were unable to convert against the Owl defense.

"Kennesaw did a great job and they took advantage of the mistakes that we made. We created some opportunities but we weren't able to convert on them," said head coach Heather Henson. "I'm very proud of the team and of their performance not just this weekend but this entire season. They never gave up and gave it all they had all season long. We came to the tournament on a mission and while we didn't complete that mission they have taken the steps to start moving in the right direction."

Junior Katie Green (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way offensively for the Bucs with two shots while Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.) and senior Hannah Johnson (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) each contributed a shot on goal.

The Bucs end their season breaking two team records and tying another while the season also saw one individual record go down. The 2007 ETSU Bucs dished at a program high 34 assists and 110 points. ETSU also recorded six shutouts on the year, which ties them with 2003 and 2004 squads. Individually Green broke the single season assist record with 10, a record that was previously set by Erin Ashton in 2005 with eight.
