CHARLOTTE, N.C.  (Sept. 18, 2009) - Two Charlotte goals in each half proved to be the difference, as the ETSU women's soccer team fell 4-0 Friday night at the D.L. Phillips Soccer Complex in Charlotte, N.C.

With the loss the Bucs close out their non-conference slate with a 1-7-0 record, while the 49ers improve to a 5-2-0 mark. Overall, ETSU faced one of its toughest non-conference schedules in program history with road trips against five 2008 NCAA Tournament participants.

"We knew going into the season that we had tough road matches against teams like Charlotte, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee," said head coach Heather Henson. "We did this where our team would be prepared for conference play later in the season. Anytime you play good programs, you learn a lot about your own team. This non-conference schedule allowed us to figure out what things worked and what areas we need to still improve in."

Charlotte opened the scoring quickly as junior midfielder Kirby Stenard netted her second goal of the season with five minutes off the board.

The 49ers extended their advantage to 2-0 after senior forward Hailey Beam tapped home a well-placed cross from teammate Oni Bernard in the 23rd minute.

"(Charlotte head coach) John and his staff did some things early that caused some confusion in our backline," said Henson. "They're such a good team staying organized with their tactical offense that when our defense rotated over, Charlotte was able to take advantage of some lanes that opened up."

After the intermission, Charlotte added to its two-goal lead when freshman defender Lacey McGrowan cleaned up a Beam corner kick inside the box giving the 49ers a 3-0 tally with 37 minutes to play.

Charlotte added one final goal in the 75th minute as junior forward Sam Fried followed up her initial shot, beating the outstretched arms of ETSU sophomore keeper Caitlin Gaughan (Indianapolis, Ind.).

"After halftime I thought our team played with better effort," said Henson. "One thing we talked about was how our defenders needed to play as a unit and for the majority of the second period we did that."

Overall, the 49ers dominated offense play with a 28-4 advantage in shots, while leading in corners 11-1.

Individually, the Bucs were led by a trio of players, senior Kia Kindell (Westchester, Ohio), sophomore Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio) and freshman Kathy Musacchio (Nashville, Tenn.), who each fired one shot on goal.

ETSU will now take a week off before opening A-Sun play against North Florida next Friday inside Summers-Taylor Stadium.

"From the start of preseason till now, I know our team has became better in a number of areas," Henson said. "We've worked hard becoming a more dynamic attacking squad. We knew with this type of early schedule our players were going to be exposed to top-level programs with great speed. I believe our girls learned that we can play against any pace, which is only going to help as league play kicks off next week."
