OXFORD, Miss. (Sept. 11, 2009) - After holding Mississippi scoreless throughout the first half the ETSU women's soccer team could not overcome a late Ole Miss rally falling 4-0 Friday night to the regionally ranked Rebels at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
With the win Ole Miss improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Bucs fall to 1-5.
"Tonight I was proud of our player's effort and how we stayed together as a team throughout the entire match," said head coach Heather Henson. "Our goal these last three non-conference matches is to work our system and prepare the girls for league play in a couple of weeks. After both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first 62 minutes of play, Ole Miss forward Hannah Weatherly opened the scoring with a
Ole Miss forward Taylor Cunningham added to the deficit with her team-leading fourth goal, off an outstanding long pass from teammate Kelsey Breathitt in the 66th minute.
Six minutes later the Rebels were at it again, as midfielder Mary Bailey placed a outstanding corner kick to teammate Brittany King, who converted three yards inside the box for a 3-0 lead.
Ole MIss added one final goal in the 75th minute, as forward Danielle Johnson ripped home her season's second score off of a long assist from sophomore defender Meredith Snow.
"Ole Miss is a deep team with 14 scholarship players," said Henson. "That depth was the difference in the second half. Early our girls stuck to our attack and that allowed us to play a quality opening 62 mintues. Unfortunately, Ole MIss has great team speed and their counterattack showed up as the match progressed."
