Women's soccer picked sixth; Monty named to preseason team

Macon, Ga. (August 20, 2009) - With the season opener just days away, the ETSU women's soccer team was selected sixth in the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches Poll the league office announced, Thursday.

 

Three-time A-Sun champion Kennesaw State enters the fall as the favorite in conference competition as they picked up six first-place votes to headline the poll with 116 points. The Owls finished second in the A-Sun regular season a year ago and are led by A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Maylee Attin-Johnson.

 

Defending regular season champion Mercer was picked second on the ballot with 112 votes, while Florida Gulf Coast was tabbed third with 89. Rounding out the results is 2009 A-Sun Tournament champion Belmont (87), Jacksonville (70), ETSU (64), Stetson (57), Campbell (42), Lipscomb (21), and USC Upstate (20).

 

The Bucs have a lot to be excited about heading into the 2009 season. ETSU finished its exhibition matches unbeaten with wins over King College and Winthrop last week. In the process ETSU outscored its opponents 6-0.

 

The league also announced Thursday that senior forward Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas) was named to the 2009 A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team. The two-time A-Sun Second Team member, and 2007 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, was one of three unanimous choices by the league's coaches this season. The dynamic offensive threat led the Bucs in goals, assists, game-winning goals and points last fall.
