Women's soccer adds 10 players for next fall

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 16, 2010) - The ETSU women's soccer team and head coach Heather Henson announced Tuesday, that a number of talented young ladies have pledged their commitments to join the Bucs squad for the 2010 season. The newest additions to the ETSU family include forwards Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.), Molly Vaughn (Nashville, Tenn.) and Kayla White (Virginia Beach, Va.), midfielders Lindsay Bickel (Hampstead, Md.), Courtney Deem (Evansville, Ind.), Lucy Goffe (Birmingham, England) and Shaun Riddle (Solon, Ohio), defender Hannah Goffe (Birmingham, England), Samantha Kron (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and goalkeeper Rachel Lewis (Sandy Spring, Md.).
"I believe this recruiting class ranks among the strongest we have ever brought to ETSU," said head coach Heather Henson. "This group of players is the culmination of a lot of hard work, the university providing us the resources it takes to recruit at this level and a little luck. With this class I believe ETSU is moving toward a championship."
Below is a look at the 2010 recruiting class
Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) -
"Ramey is a dynamic forward who has the ability to take on and create goals for herself. She also brings a blue collar work rate that will make her a success in anything she chooses to take on."
Was a four-year letterwinner under the guidance of coach Dan Potter at Kings Mountain High School… was an all-region forward in 2006, 2007 and 2008… was awarded the offensive MVP of the 2007 Gaston Gazette Cup… was twice selected as an all-state player in 2007 and 2008… was named the Southwestern Conference AA/AAA Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008… earned all-west state team honors in 2007 and 2008… was a member of the All-Charlotte Observer Team in 2007 and 2008… in 2008, Kerns was named the Western Region Player of the Year… as a member of the Mountaineers, Kerns and Kings Mountain were Southwestern Conference and Western Region champions three straight seasons from 2006-2008… Kings Mountain finished as the NCHSAA AA/AAA State Runner-up in 2008… as part of Kings Mountain 2008 team, Kerns helped the Mountaineers to a school-record 50 goals and 30 assists… played club soccer for Ion Dennis and the U-18 Charlotte Untied Futbol Club… finished the club season as the '91 Gold Premier North Carolina State Runner-up in 2008… off the field Kerns currently has a 3.84 GPA, while ranking 21st out of 228 senior classmates academically… also spend time as a member of the Renaissance Gold Club, National Technical Honor Society, National Honor Society, Beta Club and as a nominee for the Wendy's Women's High School Heisman Award… daughter of Clyde and Faye Kerns… plans to major in exercise science.
Molly Vaughn (Nashville, Tenn.) -
"Molly just finds a way. She finds a way to make her teams better, whether it is scoring or assisting goals for her teammates. She has a great deal of athletic potential."
Was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Molly Wilson at Ensworth High School… over her four-year career, Vaughn led Ensworth in goals and assists… played club soccer for coach Chris Price and the Brentwood Premier '92… led Brentwood to three straight state finals, where they were crowned champions in 2003… also earned state runner-up honors in 2004 and 2005… participated in the Tennessee Olympic Development Program for two years, where she made the state team… was member of the service club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes… in addition to soccer Vaughn lettered in softball, cross country, track and basketball… daughter of Austin and Dianne Vaughn… plans to major in education or nursing.
Kayla White (Virginia Beach, Va.) -
"Kayla is a big time talent. She brings a mixture a speed, strength and most important the willingness to run through anything to finish goals."
Was a four-year letterwinner under head coach Christine Thornton at Ocean Lakes High School… honorable mention Beach All-District performer in 2006… earned team's Rookie of the Year award as a freshman… was a Beach All-District selection in 2007… named team's best attacker in 2007… was again named a Beach All-District selection as a junior in and the team's best attacker in 2008… played club soccer for coach Dave Dengerink and the Virginia Rush U-18 Nike Team… also lettered in field hockey all four years in high school… as a member of the field hockey team, White was a first-team Beach All-District selection in 2007 and 2008, while being a second-team All-Tidewater honoree her junior season… off the field White currently has a 3.84 GPA, making the school's honor roll every semester of her high school career… White also participated as a member of the school's math and science academies… daughter of Thomas and Julie White… plans to major in biology.
Lindsay Bickel (Hampstead, Md.) -
"Lindsay is a very active midfielder that plays 18 to 18. She services great balls that become attacking opportunities very quickly."
Was a four-year letterwinner under head coach Jim MacDonald at North Carroll High School… named team captain her senior season… started at midfield her last three seasons… was named a first-team all-county player in 2007, 2008, and 2009… earned second-team all-decade honors in 2009… played club soccer for David Lapp and the Laurel Lightning… also lettered in track… competed in the 800m, 1600m, and 2-mile run… was part of North Caroll High School's Indoor Track State Title team in 2006… off the field Bickel currently has a 3.50 GPA, while earning honor roll accolades all four years in high school… was a member of the Book Club, while also being a Peer Mentor and "SET" representative… daughter of Mark and Ellen Bickel… plans to major in physical education and exercise science.
Courtney Deem (Evansville, Ind.) -
"Courtney is a center mid who is a threat in the final third. She sees the final pass and the thru run that creates scoring opportunities."
Was a four-year letterwinner under head coach Angie Lensing at Reitz Memorial High School… led RMHS to the 2008 Indiana State Championship… also led the Tigers to the 2009 IHSAA State Finals… named team captain her senior season… played club soccer under coach Jessica Hinton and the Evansville Soccer Club Elite '92… as a member of the Evansville Soccer Club, Deem - who was team captain in 2008 and 2009 - led her squad to three straight state cup births from 2007-2009… off the field Deem currently has a 3.30 GPA, while ranking 91st out of 205 students academically in her senior class… was a member of Tiger Ambassadors, Key Club, Snowflake Club, Student Council, Spanish Club and Step Squad… daughter of Brian and Robin Deem… plans to major in exercise science.
Lucy Goffe (Birmingham, England) -
"I feel that Lucy will bring a training mindset to help propel us to the next level. She is a technically sound midfielder with good vision to see the final pass."
Attended both Leasowec High School and the Quinton Church Primary School in Birmingham, England… helped Birmingham win the 11-side BCS National Championships, National Futsal Championship and five A-Side National Championship… off the field Goffe won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Academics… also spent time volunteering as a youth soccer coach… daughter of Stephen and Angela Goffe… sister Hannah also signed with ETSU this spring… plans to major in exercise science.
Shaun Riddle (Solon, Ohio) -
"Shaun is an athletic midfielder that will see time in the back. Her transition will make our team stronger defensively but will add to our attack coming forward."
Was a four-year letterwinner under head coach David Fitzgerald at Solon High School… was named team's most promising player in 2006… named as an honorable mention to the All-Northeast Ohio team… also honored as a second-team all-conference player in 2008…was a four-year Northeast Scholar Athlete Award winner from 2006-2009… played club soccer for Rob Miller and the CASA Whitecaps… participated in the Ohio Olympic Development Program for four years… was part of the Ohio ODP North State team… off the field Riddle currently has a 3.41 GPA, while earning honor roll accolades all four years in high school… was also a member of high school's SADD and Key Club… daughter of Steve and Bridgette Riddle… currently undecided for her major.
Hannah Goffe (Birmingham, England) -
"She will not lose without a fight. She is willing to sacrifice her body for the success of the team. She has a great ability to get up and down the field and service a great ball into the attacking third."

Attended Xavier College Prep School… did not play high school soccer… played club soccer for Dave Simeone and the Sereno Soccer Club… while playing for Sereno, Kron was a seven-time Arizona State Champion, a four-time Region IV semifinalist and three-time Region IV quarterfinalist… Sereno also ranked nationally in the top-10 club teams for the past three years… reached the state level of the Arizona Olympic Development Program… off the field Kron currently has a 3.30 GPA, while earning honor roll accolades all four years in high school… was a member of the Spanish Club… daughter of Ed and Cindy Kron… plans to major in business.
Rachel Lewis (Sandy Spring, Md.) -
"Hard Core describes Rachel. She knows what she wants and goes after it. She has very quick feet that allow her to make a lot of saves routine."
Was a four-year letterwinner under head coach John Vukavich at Sherwood High School… named captain in 2008 and 2009… earned team MVP honors in 2009… was named the Gaithersburg Gazette and Washington Post 2008 and 2009 Players to Watch list… named to the 2008 Gazette honorable mention all-area team… helped Sherwood to a 2006 division championships… played club soccer for Kurt Meiss and the Bethesda Freedom… also lettered in rugby… off the field Lewis currently has a 4.00 GPA, while being a member of the Honor Roll and National Honor Society… daughter of Kevin and Lonnie Lewis… plans to major in business management.
