JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 15, 2010) - The ETSU women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Radford in its final exhibition match of the preseason Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
"Again we had a great overall team effort as we were able to give everyone some playing time today," said head coach Heather Henson. "I think the girls are really starting to feed off of each other now and create chances offensively. Going into our season opener, I feel like we are where we need to be as a team. I am really proud of the team's effort today."
The Bucs were outshot in the contest 15-7, but kept the corners close at 6-5. Senior Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) played 45 scoreless minutes in goal, while making three saves.
Senior Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.) had the best look of either team in the first half as she ripped a shot from just inside the 18-yard box, but Radford keeper Che Brown was up to the challenge as she was just able to punch the ball over the crossbar.
The game remained scoreless going into the half as neither team could mount a scoring effort.
ETSU was the first to answer in the second half as Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.) made a run past a defender and beat the RU keeper striking a perfect shot into the upper 90 on the far side of the goal to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead in the 84th minute.
The lead was short lived though as Maryellen Derenda headed the corner kick from Sydney Golden past the ETSU keeper to even the match at 1-all.
Neither team was able to get a game-winner down the stretch as the contest ended with a 1-1 final.
The Bucs open the regular season on Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. as they head to UNC Asheville. For more information on the ETSU women's soccer team, please visit www.ETSUBucs.com. Also you can follow daily post and updates on the official ETSU women's soccer Twitter page at www.twitter.com/ETSUSoccer.
