Eagles slip past Bucs, 1-0

Saturday, October 09, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 8, 2010) - The ETSU women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Florida Gulf Coast Friday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

"I'm proud of the way the team played tonight even though we did not get the result we were looking for," said head coach Heather Henson. "The girls really worked hard in practice this week, and it showed in tonight's game as we were able to create a lot of chances. Some nights you can play better than your opponent and come up short on the scoreboard, and unfortunately for us we could just not get that lucky bounce."

With the loss, the Bucs (6-6-1, 2-4-0 A-Sun) are now on a four-game losing streak dating back to the heartbreaking double overtime loss to Belmont on Sept. 26.

ETSU outshot FGCU (8-4-1, 5-0-1 A-Sun) 12-7 in the contest putting five shots on goal, while the Eagles had a 2-0 edge in corners.

Florida Gulf Coast grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Jess Swartzentruber beat an ETSU defender and then slotted the ball past keeper Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) into the goal.

The Bucs were unable to net an equalizing goal in the first half as the score remained 1-0 going into the break despite out-shooting FGCU 5-1 in the half.

Senior Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.) had the best look on the night for ETSU as she fired a shot from 20-yards out in the 59th minute, but Florida Gulf Coast's Stephanie Powers made a leaping save to preserve the shutout.

ETSU is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Stetson Hatters come to town for Senior Day at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
