Bucs bounce back to pick up draw against Kennesaw State, 1-1
Monday, October 18, 2010
KENNESAW, Ga. (Oct. 17, 2010) - The ETSU women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 draw against Kennesaw State in Atlantic Sun play Sunday afternoon at KSU Soccer Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.
"It was tough for us to not come away with the win after having led for so much of the game, but anytime you pick up points in conference it's a good thing," said head coach Heather Henson. "I think the team did a really good job of not letting things that we can't control affect us in the game as they played hard for a full 110 minutes."
The Bucs (7-7-2, 3-5-1 A-Sun) were outshot 19-11 in the contest, but managed to pressure the KSU defense putting five shots on goal.
Senior Jessica Huntington (Newport News, Va.) gave ETSU a 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute as she combined with Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.) to net a shot from 15-yards out.
It looked as if the Bucs would hold on to win the game until the Owls were awarded a penalty kick on a foul in the ETSU 18-yard box in the 86th minute. On the penalty kick, keeper Caitlin Gaughan (Indianapolis, Ind.) guessed the right direction, but just missed making the save on the shot by Alma Gardarsdottir as Kennesaw State evened the match at 1-all.
In the first overtime period Gaughan came up with a couple big saves as the Owls picked up the pressure in the period. Neither team would be able to net a game winner in overtime as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Bucs close out the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they head to Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate.
