Bucs Play to a Draw in First Friendly

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 9, 2011) – In its first friendly of the 2011 season, the ETSU women’s soccer team managed a, 1-1, draw with Campbell, outshooting the Camels 13-11, at Summers-Taylor Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Gaughan (Indianapolis, Ind.) held the Camels to just one goal, making six saves through the three 30 minute periods.

In his first preseason contest as head coach of the Bucs, Adam Sayers watched his team take an early lead and then hold onto a draw after giving up a goal early into the second period. Sayers and his first year assistant, Debs Brereton, were very pleased with what they saw from their team’s first exhibition match.

The Bucs came out firing, attacking the goal for two quick shots, before junior Morgan Thomas (Maryville, Tenn.) beat the outstretched Ryan Torrero from 17 yards out, in just the ninth minute, for ETSU’s first goal of the preseason. Freshman Jenna Caudle (Middletown, Md.) dribbled the ball up the left side and found Thomas at the top of the box who quickly spun to her right and sent in the goal.

Sophomore Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) gave the Buccaneers their next best chance, settling a deflected ball in the 16th minute and blasting a shot from 20 yards out but straight at the Campbell keeper. ETSU would go on to outshoot Campbell, 6-4, in the first period.

After Campbell put up the equalizer in the second period, sophomore Kayla White would nearly put the Bucs back ahead. In the 52nd minute, White nearly missed the upper-left corner of the net, from about 30 yards out, after catching Torrero playing too far from her post.

Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio), Kathy Musacchio (Nashville, Tenn.), Jasmin Dutton (Kimmel Bay, North Wales) and Molly Vaughn (Nashville, Tenn.) would each post a shot in the third period as the Bucs outshot Campbell 4-2 in the final 30 minutes.

The ETSU women’s soccer team will play in one final exhibition contest on Tuesday, August 16 on the road against Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C.
