Sayers announces first recruit of 2012-13 class, Simona Koren

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2012) – ETSU women’s soccer head coach Adam Sayers announced his first signee for the 2012-13 recruiting class on Wednesday, as Simona Koren (Graz, Austria) has signed her National Letter of Intent to play next season for the Lady Bucs.

“I am very excited that Simona has agreed to join us," said Sayers. “She is a very talented player, and she will provide us with several attacking options. We are thrilled that she will be a part of our team.”

Koren, a forward, will add even more of an attacking threat to a Lady Buc squad which scored 43 goals in 2011 – averaging 2.39 goals per game – to set the school record for goals in a season. ETSU also finished the season ranked 16th in the NCAA in scoring offense.

The Austrian native comes to ETSU after having played for LUV Graz – an Austrian women’s soccer club team in the OFB-Frauenliga. Koren’s playing experience also branches into international competition as part of Austria’s U19 national team. She made her international debut in UEFA competition on Sep. 11, 2010 in a 4-0 win over Portugal, and has played in nine UEFA matches in her career, scoring two goals. Koren’s most recent international goal came Sep. 19, 2011 in a 7-0 win over Armenia. This game was part of the first round of qualifying for the UEFA U19 European Championships. Austria finished top of the qualifying group, which contained Italy, Armenia, and the Republic of Macedonia. In total, Koren has earned 14 international caps, scoring four goals.

“Simona’s international experience is invaluable,” Sayers added. “She has played with and against some of the best players in Europe. She is very committed to her soccer career, which is evidenced by her achievements with the national team. She will be an important component of our attack next season, and we are very much looking forward to her arrival.”
