ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 18, 2012) – After opening the season with a, 2-0, shutout of Tennessee Tech, the ETSU women’s soccer team goes for the opening weekend sweep when it travels to Greenwood Field on Sunday to take on UNC Asheville at 1 p.m.

ETSU (1-0-0) secured its first win of the 2012 season on Friday as freshman Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) scored with time expiring in the first half, before sophomore Kristi Davis (Edmond, Okla.) sealed the win with her first goal in the 69th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Sierra Campbell (Thompson’s Station, Tenn.) made two saves off 13 Tech shots, earning her first shutout in her first collegiate start.

UNC Asheville (0-1-0) kicked off its season on Friday as well, falling to Eastern Kentucky, 2-1, at EKU Soccer Field. EKU took the lead with a goal eight minutes in, only to see the Bulldogs equalize in the 27th minute as Kaitlyn Eckert found the back of the net for Asheville’s first goal of the season. In the 40th minute, the Colonels took the lead for good to enter halftime up a goal and hold on through the second for the win.

Of last year’s squad, Asheville returns its top two goal scorers in Eckert and Amanda Knapp. The duo scored six goals apiece in 2011, with Knapp adding four assists to Eckert’s three. The Bulldogs also return Ferriss Roberts, who finished the year with five goals to tie for third on the team.

Sunday’s meeting will be the 15th all-time between ETSU and Asheville, with the Bulldogs leading the series 8-6-0. The Lady Bucs have gotten the better of Asheville in recent years, winning the last two meetings and three of the last four. Last year, ETSU defeated Asheville, 3-0, at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

The last time the two sides met at Greenwood Field was Aug. 22, 2010, as ETSU walked away with a, 4-1, victory. In that meeting, then-ETSU freshmen Lindsay Bickel (Hampstead, Md.) and Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) each scored their first career goals. Bickel knocked in a rebound off her own shot in the 35th minute, while Kerns sealed the win with the Lady Bucs’ fourth goal of the game in the 88th minute.
