FARMVILLE, Va. (Sept. 14, 2012) – Bridget Bergquist scored with 21 minutes to play in the second half, giving Longwood the lead and eventual victory against the ETSU women’s soccer team, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Two minutes after ETSU (6-2-0) equalized off an own goal, Bergquist brought the ball into the box and sent in her first goal of the year to jump Longwood (5-2-0) back ahead. The Lady Bucs threatened to bring the score level through the final act with shots on goal from Emilee Engelhaupt (Charlotte, N.C.) and Lucy Goffe (Birmingham, England), but were held off to suffer just their second defeat in non-conference play.
ETSU’s goal came off a free kick from junior Samantha Kron (Paradise Valley, Ariz.). Following a Lancer foul, Kron sent a cross into the box which an LU defender attempted to clear, but had the ball hit off the side of her foot and deflect into the back of the net. The goal equalized the match at the time, with the Lancers having led off a 22nd-minute goal from Samantha Phillips.
For the game, ETSU and Longwood were even at eight shots apiece. Junior Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain N.C.), Engelhaupt and L. Goffe took a game-high two shots each.
The opening portion of the game was very defensive, with ETSU and Longwood taking just one shot apiece through the first 20 minutes. Kelsey Pardue took the first good chance for the Lancers, sliding a shot past Krajenta that struck the right post and was covered up.
Still threatening, Longwood found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Lindsey Ottavio had the ball outside the right half of the penalty area and sent a cross into the box. The ball deflected off an ETSU defender, and found Samatha Phillips who netted the game’s first goal.
The Lady Bucs turned up the pressure following the goal, outshooting the Lancers, 3-0, the remainder of the half. Kron sent in two corners with Kerns, the A-Sun's leading goal scorer, firing a shot on frame, but the Lady Bucs were held off the board and entered the half down a goal.
ETSU controlled possession through the opening part of the second half. Kron lined up for two corners in the first five minutes, followed by shots from Kerns and Engelhaupt.
Halfway through the period, the Lady Bucs broke through. Kron lined up a free kick following a Longwood foul, sending a dangerous ball through the box. An LU defender went for the clearance, but missed her mark and deflected Kron’s free kick into the back for Kron's first goal of the season.
Minutes later, Longwood took the lead for good. Bridget Bergquist won a ball on the ETSU side of the field, and dribbled by an oncoming Kara Krajenta (Cordova, Tenn.) to send in what proved to be the game-winner.
ETSU gets a week off the field before returning home to start conference play with Stetson next Friday at 7 p.m.
