JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 6, 2013) – The ETSU women’s soccer team remained unbeaten this season at Summers-Taylor Stadium, defeating Winthrop 2-0 Friday night. In her first collegiate start, freshman goalkeeper Anna Yancey (Rosemark, Tenn.) recorded a shutout, making four saves on 17 Winthrop shot attempts.
The Buccaneers (2-3-0) took a 1-0 lead in the match’s 24th minute when junior midfielder Emilee Engelhaupt (Charlotte, N.C.) scored her second goal of the season. Engelhaupt was assisted on the play by freshman Thomai Vardali (Koufalia, Greece) and sophomore Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria).
Senior defender Samantha Kron (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) helped preserve ETSU’s eventual shutout with an acrobatic team save in the 27th minute following an onslaught of Winthrop activity in the box.
"Kron is a very intelligent player," ETSU head coach Adam Sayers said following the win. "She anticipated Winthrop's opportunity very well and positioned herself appropriately. It was a very important part of us getting the result tonight."
The Bucs took a 1-0 lead into halftime and continued to put pressure on the Eagles (2-1-0) in the second half.
Freshman midfielder Jenny Pöltl (Steinberg-Dorfl, Austria) nearly beat Winthrop keeper Amelia Henderson in the 54th minute. Pöltl rocketed a high shot out of Henderson’s reach, but the attempt caught the crossbar before sailing out of play.
ETSU added an insurance goal in the 65th minute, with junior forward Kristi Davis (Edmond, Okla.) recording her first goal of the season on a rebound following a shot by Dutton.
The Bucs held Winthrop scoreless for the remainder of the match, sealing the 2-0 win and their second victory in as many tries at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
Yancey made several impressive saves en route to picking up the win for ETSU, including a diving stop in the 51st minute to thwart a point black shot attempt by Winthrop’s Lauren Watts. With the win, Yancey moved to 1-0-0 on the season.
ETSU outshot Winthrop 21-17 in the match.
The Buccaneers will begin a two-match road trip next weekend when they take on Alabama A&M Friday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. before travelling to Western Carolina Sunday, Sept. 15.
