ETSU’s posts league-high 45 student-athletes on all-academic team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Jan. 17, 2018) -- Forty-five ETSU student-athletes earned spots on the Fall 2017 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, as the league office announced the awards on Tuesday.

In total, 319 student-athletes were placed on the SoCon all-academic list, with ETSU leading all member schools with 45. Football led the list with 15 student-athletes, while women’s soccer posted 12, men’s soccer had seven, men’s cross country added five, and volleyball and women’s cross country each had three receive the honor.

Fifteen student-athletes across the conference have maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average, with senior women’s cross country standout Macy Carrier (Bluff City, Tenn.) joining that group.

Each of the SoCon’s 10 institutions had at least 14 honorees, representing the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.

The league’s 10 women’s soccer teams led the way with 83 academic all-conference selections, while the nine football schools were second with 81 and the nine volleyball programs were third with 46.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
