ETSU women’s soccer begins 2018 with strong showing

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 8, 2018) – The ETSU women’s soccer team will ride a wave of momentum into its season opener next Thursday, defeating Appalachian State 4-1 in preseason action Wednesday night at Summers Taylor Stadium.

The Bucs, who returned 20 players from last year’s squad, showed its chemistry early and often en route to victory. ETSU maintained possession for the majority of the game and outshot the Mountaineers 18-13 with seven shots on goal.

Wednesday afternoon’s friendly was broken into three 30-minute periods as opposed to the traditional 45-minute halves.

ETSU provided a glimpse of its present and future in the first period, as senior forward Eleonora Goldoni (Ferrara, Italy) buried ETSU’s first goal in the 23rd minute of play. Goldoni, who is fifth on the all-time ETSU scoring list, received a setup pass from freshman newcomer Sarah Williams (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) just minutes into William’s debut.

The Bucs added to the lead in the second period with two more goals, both of which involved senior Rachel Harbin (Arlington, Tenn.). Harbin volleyed a pass to Goldoni in the 45th minute to give ETSU a 2-0 lead.

Harbin scored the third goal for the Bucs four minutes later, dribbling behind the goalkeeper after a deflected pass from Pauline Vienne (Lausanne, Switzerland).

With a 3-0 defecit into the final period, Appalachian State scored its lone goal in the 56th minute courtesy of Kirsten Seeley off a pass from Mary Perkins. The score remained 3-1 until the final five minutes of play, as ETSU’s sophomore forward Sarah Connolly (Ballygowan, Northern Ireland) took one halfway down the field and scored unassisted to seal the win.

With the preseason now out of the way, ETSU will turn its attention to the regular season. The Bucs will open the 2018 campaign at home against George Mason on Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m.
