Women’s soccer earns first result with road win over Spartans

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Aug. 30, 2018) – The ETSU women’s soccer team earned a much-needed road victory in Spartanburg, S.C. Thursday night, knocking off USC Upstate 1-0 in non-conference action.

After falling on the wrong end of four relatively competitive matchups to open the season, ETSU has picked up its first win of the 2018 campaign. USC Upstate falls 3-2 with its first home loss of the season.

“We had a fantastic performance and a fantastic result today,” said ETSU head coach Adam Sayers. “(USC Upstate) is a dangerous team and a very hard-working team. If you allow them to gain momentum it puts the pressure for long periods. But we kept the ball well, we played it out well and we countered quickly.”

Senior defender Isabel Hodgson (Adelaide, Australia) put ETSU on the board first in the 19th minute of play with a header in the box. She directed it past the keeper into the top-left corner of the net from about five yards out.

On the goal, Hodgson received a head pass from junior defender Elena Pisani (Milan, Italy) off a corner by senior midfielder Fiona Dodge (Pontypool, Wales). It was Hodgson’s first goal of the season and Pisani’s first career assist with the Bucs.

Recording her first clean sheet of the year, senior goalkeeper Lea Ann Cutshall (Johnson City, Tenn.) tallied six saves — four of which came in a competitive second half.

The competitive contest saw each side take 10 shots on the night. The Bucs had five corners throughout the game, while USC Upstate took four corners — three of which came in the final minutes of the match.

Tonight’s win marks ETSU’s 10th all-time victory over the Spartans in as many tries. The Bucs have also outscored USC Upstate by a combined 9-0 in the last four contests — dating back to 2014.

Up next for ETSU is another road trip to the Carolinas to kick of the September portion of the schedule. The Bucs will face the Charlotte 49ers in a Sunday night showdown set to kick off Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
