JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 31, 2018) – ETSU senior forward Eleonora Goldoni (Ferrara, Italy) has been absent from the Buccaneer lineup the last three games, as she joined the Italian national team on assignment last week.
Goldoni, who finished with a team-best 11 goals and ranked second in the Southern Conference with 25 points last season, rejoined Italy in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier set to take place in France in 2019.
“We are very proud of Leo,” said ETSU head coach Adam Sayers. “It is a fantastic honor to be selected for your national team, which she thoroughly deserves. Importantly, in addition to her excellent ability as a player, she has a first class attitude, work ethic and willingness to develop. She will represent ETSU very well on the global stage.”
Goldoni and Italy will face Belgium on Sept. 4 in the final qualifier match. The Italian team has played seven qualifying matches in Group 6 so far and will travel to Belgium for the final qualifier.
Italy leads the group with 21 points, meaning they have an undefeated 7-0 record in the qualifying rounds. Italy is grouped with Belgium (13 points), Portugal (8), Romania (5) and Moldova (1).
Through seven games, Italy has already clinched a spot in The Women’s World Cup, meaning Goldoni will hope to compete against the world’s best throughout the country of France from June 7 to July 7 of 2019.
The senior forward jumped to a hot start this season in ETSU’s 4-1 exhibition victory over Appalachian State, burying two goals for the Bucs. Goldoni is fifth on the all-time ETSU women’s soccer list in career points (62) and fourth in career goals (28).
In regular season play, Goldoni also scored her first goal of the season against Eastern Kentucky, giving her one score through her two games this season. She has played in all 90 minutes of each game.
