Cutshall corrals 10 saves to tie career-high at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Sept. 10, 2018) – The ETSU defense scratched and clawed all night in Blacksburg, Va., but would ultimately fall to Virginia Tech 2-0 Monday night at Thompson Field.

The Hokies maintained possession for the majority of the game and fired 28 shots, but ETSU made matters difficult for the Virginia Tech strikers with blocks, deflected passes and tenacious defensive play in the box.

Senior goalkeeper Lea Ann Cutshall (Johnson City, Tenn.) grinded out 10 saves in the contest. She not only surpassed her season high total of seven against Eastern Kentucky, but also tied a career high for saves in a game. ETSU also added a team save for 11 on the night.

Virginia Tech scored its first goal in the 34th minute, as Karlie Johnson tallied her fourth goal of the year off an assist from Kristina Diana. The Hokies added another score with a header in the 82nd minute by Lilly Weber.

ETSU nearly evened up the score in the final minute of the first half, moving into enemy territory with a pass in the box before picking up an offside call with seven seconds remaining.

The Bucs had three shots on goal from three seniors — Isabel Hodgson (Adelaide, Australia), Brittney Jones (Germantown, N.C.) and Fiona Dodge (Pontypool, Wales).

Up next for ETSU is a road matchup at South Carolina State on Sept. 16. Kickoff Sunday from Orangeburg, S.C. is set for 4 p.m. Last season, ETSU defeated South Carolina State, 8-0.
