JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 30, 2004) - East Tennessee State women's tennis head coach Steve Brooks announced that Muriel Sherwood has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Bucs for the 2004-05 season.
The Atlanta native has played tennis for the past nine years at the No. 1 and 2 positions under Coach Swain. In high school, she lettered three times and posted a 50-3 record. She achieved a No. 76 ranking in the Southern Section and No. 16 ranking in Georgia last season. She is a member of the United States Tennis Association and ranked No. 279 in the girls 18 category. Sherwood was also a member of the Atlanta Metro All-State Team.
"I am very excited to have Muriel join our team," commented Brooks. "She is a hard worker and a great young woman. Her personality fits well with our upbeat and positive team. She will step in and immediately add depth to our lineup. I have known Muriel since she was around 10 and I know she is about to become the player she has dreamed of becoming. With Muriel on the team we are one step closer to being regarded one of the best teams in the conference and region."
The ETSU women's tennis program will enter the 2004-05 season coming off of a record-breaking year in which the team finished fourth in the Southern Conference with a 6-4 record and a 17-13 overall record. Their wins included a first ever win over SoCon opponent College of Charleston in a close 4-3 match at home, and a thrilling 4-1 victory over No. 65 Virginia Tech on the road.
