PRINCETON, NJ (FEBRUARY, 9, 2007) - ETSU women's tennis suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to the Princeton University Tigers today with the Ladybucs now standing at 2-5 on the season.
The Tigers gained the early lead in the match winning the doubles point. Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Vita Moskoliova (Minsk, Belarus) fell to Kristen Scott and Blakely Ashley 8-0 in the No. 3 position, while Olya Batsula (Minsk Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tennessee) evened the doubles 1-1 with a convincing win over Sarah Huah and Darcy Robertson 8-3 in the No. 2 slot. Deciding the doubles point for Princeton, Melissa Saiontz and Ivana King defeated Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) in the No. 1 position.
In singles play Olya Batsula fell to Ivana King 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 position, while Yevgeniya Stupak secured the first point for the Ladybucs with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Darcy Robertson in the No. 2 position. Masha Ilina tied up the match 2-2 by defeating Blakely Ashley 6-4, 6-2 in the third position. Putting ETSU in the lead for the first time in the match, Elena Volobueva defeated Laura Trimble 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 5 slot
With a 3-2 lead the Ladybucs looked like they could take the win, with Tara Byrne and Vita Moskaliova battling in the fourth and sixth positions. Byrne narrowly lost the first set to Sarah Huah before eventually falling 6-4, 6-1, while Moskaliova was defeated by Kelly Stewart in another hard fought match deciding the win for the Tigers.
"We were ahead at one point, and I thought we were still going to win this match. They lead 2-1, then we were ahead. Tara was battling, and Vita was battling. Vita could've won her first set and Tara barely lost hers," said head coach Steve Brooks. "Olya and Tara played really good doubles today, and it was good that Geniya got a win. Princeton is a really good team and we were not able to pull out another win, but we are still young as a team. We just need more awareness and to work better as a team"
ETSU will continue their season tomorrow with a match against University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pa. at 1 p.m.
