PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2009) - Facing one of its toughest fields this fall, the ETSU women's tennis team opened play at the 2009 Cissie Leary Invitational with multiple wins at the Lott Tennis Courts on the campus of Penn University, Friday.
Senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) -- the tournament's top seed - picked up one win in opening day action. The No. 119-ranked ITA singles player dropped Jenna Ritz of Yale, 6-0, 6-3.
Fellow upperclassmen teammate, junior, Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) earned her first win of the fall, after the Tennessee Tech transfer made quick work of Penn's Charlotte Ezratti, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action ETSU picked up its lone doubles win as Stupak and Holtzhausen dominated their pairs match against Yale's Kent and Rhee, 8-2. The ETSU duo will now face host Penn's No. 1 doubles team of Anderson and Wolf Saturday afternoon.
"Overall, I'm please with both Kelly and Yevgeniya today," said head coach Steve Brooks. "I believe with Kelly getting her first win today, that it's only going to help boast her confidence as we move forward. Also I like what I saw in doubles today. One thing that is going to be vital to our team's success this spring is our doubles play. If we can have great effort and pull out the early point in doubles, then I expect big things for this team this upcoming season."
