JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 20, 2010) - For the second consecutive day the ETSU women's tennis team defended its home turf as the Lady Bucs topped league rival Campbell 6-1 Saturday at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
With the win ETSU improved to 10-3 overall with a 6-0 A-Sun mark, while the Camels fell to a 10-4 mark with a 5-1 record in league play.
"It's great to still be undefeated in conference play," said head coach Steve Brooks. "This is the position we have talked being in since the season began in January. We have to keep getting better this week in practice because we have some tough road matches coming up at Kentucky and Lipscomb next week."
As play opened the ETSU sweep all three doubles contests for the early 1-0 lead over visiting Campbell.
The Lady Bucs then extended their lead to 2-0 as junior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) picked up a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anais Gomar at No. 6.
Fellow upperclassman senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) then rolled over her opponent in Lisa Sutton with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph, pulling the Lady Bucs within one point of their 10th win in their last 11 matches.
Closing out the win was sophomore Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) who outlasted Cristina Garcia Brunel at the No. 2 position 7-6 (4), 6-1.
ETSU's final wins of the day came as sophomore Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and freshman Diana Navarostska (Livi, Ukraine) earned straight sets victories over Blanca Saenz and Ana Survilladze.
Campbell's lone win came as Nikolova defeated ETSU sophomore Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) 2-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9.
"Overall, we play better today," said Brooks. "We wanted to come out and play cleaner and we accomplished that this afternoon. Hopefully, Karina can work through this injury, because we are going to need her as we move forward."
The Lady Bucs returns to action as they travel to Kentucky for a 2 p.m. contest Tuesday in Lexington, Ky.
