JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 19, 2010) - Two days removed from losing at No. 71 William and Mary the ETSU women's tennis team bounced back in a big way defeating league rival No. 73 USC Upstate 5-2 at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
With the win ETSU improved to 9-3 overall with a 5-0 A-Sun mark, while the Spartans fell to a 10-2 mark with a 4-1 record in league play.
"Upstate is a good team so I'm happy we got another conference win today," said head coach Steve Brooks. "That being said, the girls need to relax more out there. In some of the matches we have players getting tight and when that happens we start thinking too much about our shots instead of just swinging and hitting. After today's win and with another match tomorrow I hope the girls can keep improving and play a little more clean against Campbell."
As play opened the ETSU squeaked out two doubles wins for the quick 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bucs then extended their advantage to 2-0 as junior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) ran her winning streak to 10 straight matches with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Ana-Sofia Camberos.
Minutes later sophomore Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) gave ETSU a 3-0 lead as she played strong with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set victory over Carolina Bello.
Needing only one more point to earn their third straight win at home this season senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) closed out the Spartans with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win over No. 112 Francesca Valderrama in No. 1 singles action.
ETSU's final win of the day came as sophomore Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) earned her 11 victory this spring as the Madrid, Spain native prevailed with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Monica Pezzotti.
The Lady Bucs returns to action immediately as they host Campbell with a 1 p.m. contest Saturday at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
