ETSU rolls through Wake Forest, Radford in dominating effort
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Jan. 20, 2013) – The wins kept coming for the ETSU women’s tennis team on day two of the Wake Forest Winter Classic, as the Buccaneers were perfect on Sunday going 3-0 against Radford in doubles and 6-0 against Wake Forest in singles.
After giving up a total of just five games in three doubles sets against the Highlanders, ETSU’s lineup of Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece), Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil), Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela), Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia), Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) and Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) dropped just two sets in six victories against the Demon Deacons. Five of the six are playing in their first competitive season for ETSU – Anderazza a returner and Choo having redshirted a season ago – and are showing the Bucs may be a force to be reckoned with come A-Sun Tournament time.
“What a great day for the future of our program,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “I just want to commend these girls on their performances today. It was fun to be a part of.
“As a whole, everyone stepped up and struck the ball very well. I can’t single out any one individual performance, as today was a complete team effort.”
Saturday, the Buccaneers proved they could compete with the likes of an ACC school by taking two-of-three doubles matches from Wake Forest. Sunday, ETSU’s six proved it was no fluke, taking it to the Demon Deacons on their home court.
At the top, it was Kolovou coming back from dropping the first set, 7-5, to win the next two against Kasey Gardiner, 6-3, 6-4. Andreazza played the No. 2 match, coming back from Saturday’s loss against Elon to take out Xue Zhang, 6-1, 6-4. The ITA’s No. 125 nationally ranked singles player, Andrea Retolaza, was the victim on court three, swept by an ETSU freshman in Gerbasi, 6-4, 6-2. Another Buccaneer freshman, Choo, won at No. 4 singles, fighting back from dropping the first set, 6-1, to take the next two against Karen Foreman, 6-2, 6-2. Finally, it was Espana and Dahbi at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, with Espana crushing Brigita Bercyte, 6-1, 6-0, and Dahbi winning both her sets at love against Catherine Roach.
The third and final day of the Wake Forest Winter Classic begins Monday at 9 a.m. ETSU will get the morning started against Elon in doubles, before going up against Radford in singles.
