Kolovou, Andreazza, Choo win in singles
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 3, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team served up the dual season with a victory over MTSU, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Nashboro Village Athletic Club.
Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) and freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) followed up an ETSU (1-0) doubles victory with straight-set wins against MTSU (1-4) on courts one and four, respectively, before junior Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) sealed the deal in the No. 2 hole by defeating Irina Constantinide in a second-set tiebreak, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Choo won alongside freshman Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) at doubles No. 1, while junior newcomers Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) and Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) wrapped up the match’s first point on court three.
“I give the girls a lot of credit for coming away with a solid win,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “I don’t think we played our best today, but to still win against a strong opponent with a young squad shows we have room for improvement.”
Gerbasi and Choo – No. 8 in doubles in the Ohio Valley Region – took the first set of the day, 8-6, against Carla Nava and Yuiri Nomoto to begin the dual season 1-0. Espana and Dahbi’s victory came by a score of 8-5 to give ETSU the first point of the match.
MTSU tied the score with the first singles win. Playing in the first dual match of her collegiate career, Gerbasi was downed by MTSU’s Flavia Nagayama, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Choo responded to put the Lady Bucs back on top by defeating Nava, 6-4, 6-1, before Kolovou came back from dropping the first set to give up just three games the rest of the way to Nomoto, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Espana and Nayara Moraes were in a first-set tiebreak at No. 5 and Dahbi led Alexa Torres, 6-2, 1-0, at No. 6, but Andreazza clinched the victory to leave the other two matches unfinished.
The Lady Buccaneers have over a week until their next match, taking on Liberty in Lynchburg, Va., next Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m.
