Match decided in a tiebreaking third set
WILMINGTON, N.C. (March 10, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Sunday afternoon at the UNCW Courts.
The loss drops the Bucs to 4-3, while UNC Wilmington improves to 7-5 this spring.
“Today we just choked, plain and simple,” said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “Wilmington outfought us today, full credit to their players for not giving up.”
With the match knotted up at three games apiece, it all came down to a singles matchup between ETSU’s Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) and Wilmington’s Kelly Cameron. Gerbasi started out strong, taking the first set, 6-4, but Cameron fired back with a 7-5 triumph in set No. 2. Fittingly, this hotly-contested contest came down to a tiebreaking third set where Gerbasi battled, but ultimately ended up dropping a 7-6 (8-6) decision, giving the match victory to the Seahawks.
Earlier in the day, ETSU was able to get on the board first with the doubles point on an 8-4 Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Gerbasi victory over UNCW’s Angie Sekely and Olga Blank, as well as an 8-3 win for the duo of Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) and Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) against Miller Hales and Kelly Cameron.
In singles action, Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) defeated Christina Riley 6-0, 6-4, while Choo also added a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Blank. After dropping Christine Kharkevich 7-5 in the first set, ETSU’s Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) lost control of the match with a 6-1 loss in the second set and a 6-0 shortcoming in the tiebreaker for a point that later proved to be very critical.
The ETSU women’s tennis team will look to put this disappointing performance behind them when they travel to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. to take on the No. 61 College of Charleston Cougars (6-5) Monday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
