Lady Bucs begin conference season against the Spartans

SPARTANBURG, S.C. and CULLOWHEE, N.C. (March 15, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team has a full road slate this weekend, opening Atlantic Sun play Saturday against USC Upstate and heading back to non-conference action versus Western Carolina on Sunday.

Saturday’s A-Sun opener between ETSU (4-4) and USC Upstate (8-3) is scheduled for 10 a.m., from the Upstate Tennis Complex. Sunday’s matchup with WCU (1-8) takes place from the tennis courts at the Catamount Athletic Complex with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Lady Buccaneers will be looking to rebound from a 0-2 weekend. UNC Wilmington scraped out a decision, 4-3, last Saturday in Wilmington, N.C., and No. 61 College of Charleston overpowered the Lady Bucs by a final of 4-1 on Sunday.

Freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) was the only bright spot, winning both her singles matches through ETSU’s two losses. Choo got by UNCW’s Olga Blank, 6-0, 6-1, and CofC’s Jenny Falcone, 6-0, 6-4. Each win came at the No. 4 position and extended Choo’s winning streak to five matches. The Malaysian freshman also became the first Lady Buc to reach the 20-win plateau (20-7 overall) and is 7-1 through the dual season.

Senior newcomer Antonia Kolovou (Larisa Greece) suffered her first loss of the dual season against the Seahawks, falling to Angie Sekely one court one, 6-4, 6-1. The defeat ended Kolovou’s eight-match winning streak as she now stands at 14-9 overall, 6-1 dual. Kolvou’s Sunday matchup went unfinished.

The weekend outlook is good for the Lady Bucs in terms of their pattern this year. Through its eight matches, ETSU has a trend of winning two and losing two before coming back to win the next pair.

Scouting the Spartans

The rebound will have to start Saturday against the Spartans, who ride a season-long four match winning streak. Along the way, Upstate has defeated Converse (D II), Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville State and Coastal Georgia (NAIA). The streak is Upstate’s longest since 2010 when it won six in a row over an 18-day span.

Leading the way is two-time A-Sun Player of the Week Constanze Kuerten at 8-2 in singles through the dual season. Kuerten is 3-1 at the No. 2, 5-1 at the No. 3 and pairs with Allison Beeler in doubles for a perfect 6-0 spring mark. Isabel von Stryk is another top Spartan to also be honored as the conference’s player of the week. von Stryk is 6-3 in singles and Upstate’s primary No. 1 player with a 4-2 mark in those matches.

Scouting the Catamounts

Western Carolina won its first match of the spring season, 5-2, at Presbyterian, but has dropped the last eight heading into this weekend. The day prior to taking on the Lady Bucs, WCU hosts Elon in Southern Conference play where it currently is 0-4. The Catamounts’ latest defeats came last weekend at Wofford and NC Central. Both matches ended 4-3.

Top singles player Stacia Kissell holds WCU’s best record at 4-5. Kissell has played all nine of her contests at the No. 1 and also pairs with Karen Jimenez at No. 2 doubles. Jimenez is the Catamounts’ No. 2 singles player and is 3-6 on the spring season. Erin Maguire and Nicole Nielly are the only two heading into the weekend on a win.

Series History

ETSU is 4-1 all-time against the Spartans since they joined the A-Sun in 2008. USC Upstate won the first meeting, 5-2, but the Lady Bucs have won the last four, including a 7-0 trouncing last year in Johnson City. The Lady Bucs have won the last five meeting with Western Carolina. The two sides met last season for the first time since 2005 with ETSU coming out on top, 6-1, at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center. WCU’s last series victory came in 2002, 4-3, in Culowhee.
