Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State women's tennis team took four of six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches on their way to a 5-2 win over Southern Conference rival Western Carolina this morning at the Memorial Center.
Senior Paty Vega continued her winning ways as she defeated Western Carolina's Kristin Munn 6-0,6-0 at No. 1 singles. Mami Inoue also proved to be victorious at No. 2 singles as she defeated Shelley Fitzpatrick 6-1,6-0. Jessica Irey also won her singles match as she bested Erin Johnson 6-3,6-3 at No. 3 singles. Western Carolina staged a comeback as Shannon Zalinski defeated Tatiana Arriaran 6-0,6-0 at No. 4 singles. The Catamounts' Emmy King also won her match at No. 5 singles , as she defeated Cara Prupas 2-6,6-2,6-2. Susan Torbett then clinched the win as she defeated Amy Rex 6-4,6-1 at No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, the team of Vega and Inoue defeated Fitzpatrick and Zalinski 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Irey and Arriaran earned a hard fought win at No.2 doubles by defeating King and Johnson, 9-8. The final doubles match saw the team of Prupas and Aimee Villavicencio take an 8-2 win over Rex and Munn.
With the win, the Bucs improve to 6-6 on the year and 3-1 in Southern Conference play. The Bucs will return to action as they travel to Appalachian State on Wednesday, April 4.
