Women's Tennis Drops One to Tennessee Tech

Johnson City, Tenn. (March 22, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team dropped to 1-11 today with a loss to Tennessee Tech by the score of 6-1 in the Memorial Center Friday evening. In doubles action, Tennessee Tech earned two wins and was awarded a match by default. Lupita Hernandez and Ana Marie Cibils defeated the ETSU team of Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia), 9-7. Karmelina Rivera and Maja Russinova shut out Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia), 8-0. In singles action, the Golden Eaglettes dominated the Lady Bucs. In the No. 1 match, Hernandez wins 6-2, 6-0 over Arriaran. Irey gave ETSU their one win today by defeating Cibils, 6-4, 8-6. Luciana Tamburini took the third match in two sets from Halim, 6-3, 6-3. Villavicencio lost to Rivera, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot. In the fifth match, Anita Obando defeated Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.), 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 6 match, Charmaine Luvis (Gastonia, N.C.) lost to Tech's Louise Holmvik. The Lady Bucs will play against Southern Conference opponent, Appalachian State, on Saturday, March 23rd at 3:00 p.m. following the men's match against Charleston Southern.
