CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 15, 2003) - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team, behind four singles wins, defeated East Tennessee State, 4-2, at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C.
Due to the weather conditions, the teams did not play doubles. Charlotte won four of the six singles matches to win the match.
In number one singles, Charlotte's Laura Swain defeated East Tennessee State's Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland), 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. In number two singles, Charlotte's Lindsay Morris defeated East Tennessee State's Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In number three singles, Buccaneer junior Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) defeated Charlotte's Ashleigh Murray, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. In number four singles, Charlotte's Marilyn Clark defeated ETSU's Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.), 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. In number five singles, ETSU's Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) defeated Jennifer Hatch, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. In number six singles, Charlotte's Megan Bullins defeated ETSU's Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia), 6-3, 6-3.
With the loss the Buccaneers fall to 8-7 on the season. ETSU returns to action March 16 as they take on SoCon foe Georgia Southern.
