ROCK HILL, S.C. (April 9, 2004) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team fell to the Winthrop Lady Eagles Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C. by a score of 5-2. In the loss ETSU falls to 13-11 overall, while the Winthrop improves to 13-2 in their final match of the season.
"We had our chances," commented head coach Steve Brooks. "They are a very good quality team."
ETSU won the doubles point with a win from Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) at the No. 2 slot over Renata Caceresa and Paula Takahashi in an 8-0 decision and a win by default in the No. 3 slot.
In singles action ETSU, Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) were able to draw their matches to a third set but were defeated by Winthrop by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 respectively. ETSU picked up their only other point by default at the No. 6 slot.
Up next for the Buccaneers is an away contest against SoCon opponent Appalachian State on April 14. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
