JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2004) - The Buccaneer women's tennis team wrapped up a successful day of play on Sunday winning all three of their matches. East Tennessee State garnered wins over Carson-Newman and Milligan each match with a final score of 6-1. "It was a long day of tennis," remarked head coach Steve Brooks. "We played strong in every spot." In doubles, the Bucs were able to shut out Carson-Newman and Milligan in all three pairings to claim the doubles point. In singles, the team again demonstrated their strength winning five in each match. Senior Aimee Villavencio (Lexington, Ky.) played well in all of her matches. She went 6-1, 6-2 against Carson-Newman's Kristi Kirkland and shut out Milligan's Sarah Wallingford 6-0, 6-0. Freshman newcomer Shelley VanCleve (Centerville, Tenn.) made her first collegiate dual match appearances. VanCleve lost 6-3, 6-4 against Olga Petrovic of Carson-Newman and 7-6(5) in the loss to Milligan's Lyndsey Bowie. "I'm really proud of Shelley," said Brooks. "She didn't win, but she played hard." They will face Wright State on Friday, Feb. 13 at 4:00 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky and Southern Illinois on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively. ETSU 6, Carson-Newman 1 Singles 1.
